After 2 long weeks, I finally finished reading the book “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khaled Hosseini. It’s a 300++ pages 51-chapter book, so it really took me some time to finish it. I like the book despite its lengthy narration. In fact, it’s one of the books that left a lasting impression on me.
A Thousand Splendid Suns
It’s a dramatic story between Mariam and Laila, two Afghan women of different generation and set against the turmoil days of Afghanistan. It’s a heavy, emotional and complicated story – pang MMK ang plot. If you want a feel good book like the Shopaholic Series, this book is NOT for you. This is the must-read kind of book but you’ll never want to read again, ang bigat sa puso eh. 😦 The book tackles different social issues such as illegitimacy, social acceptance, death, relationships, arranged marriages, war and domestic violence. Oh di ba kaguluhan talaga?! It’s also informative as it have bits of facts on Afghanistan — the culture, politics, war, etc. Hmm, it’s not all negative actually. There are lots of moral lessons in the story too. I love how the story ended wherein the lovers, separated by war, reunited in the end. Love will always find its way despite adversities. (Naks! Yung love story talaga yung nagustuhan ko. Hehehe!)
Since I’m so fond of the book and I started researching things about it, I just found out that they’re making a movie out of it. Production has not started and yet I’m already excited. I saw the movie ‘The Kite Runner‘ (which was also written by the same author) and it’s really good. I’m still looking for a copy of the book at the public libraries and hopefully I can borrow it as my next read.
